I’m Gabriel Mato, a Spanish lawyer from the Canary Islands. I have been involved in politics since 1991, in a variety of roles: Deputy Mayor of the Council of Santa Cruz de La Palma, Counsellor of Agriculture and Fisheries in the Canary Islands Government, President of the Canary Islands Parliament and member of the Bureau of the National Parliament (Congreso de los Diputados). In 2009 I became an MEP. In the European Parliament, I coordinate the EPP Group’s work on fisheries, in addition to my role as Vice-Chair of the delegation for relations with Central America. I am a member of the delegation to the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly, but also work on International Trade, Petitions and relations with the ACP region. I am especially interested in issues related to the Outermost Regions, namely agriculture, maritime policy, fisheries and development.
